Flashback: a brief history of Bluetooth

It took years but USB eventually replaced the weird proprietary connectors of early mobile phones. However, years before USB became the norm another data transfer technology wanted to unite all electronics – and it didn’t even use wires. From Infrared to Bluetooth Bluetooth was developed by Ericsson in the 1990s. It is named after the 10th century Danish king Harald “Bluetooth” Gormsson, who united Denmark and Norway. The Bluetooth logo combines the runes ᚼ and ᛒ, which are Harald’s initials. The name (which was actually proposed by an Intel engineer) signified the ambition to become...

The pair is already available in Europe and Taiwan. We saw renders of the upcoming Huawei P50 series, which show three camera sensors in one camera ring and a separate one for the rumored 1-inch main camera. Weekly poll: is the Asus Zenfone 8 the small phone for you or would you like a Zenfone 8 Flip?

Truly tiny flagships may never return, but over the last couple of months a couple of relatively small models did appear. The latest is the Asus Zenfone 8, which has a 5.9” display with 20:9 aspect ratio and a punch hole selfie camera. Its dimensions are 148x68.5x8.9mm, that’s as small as Android flagships get at the moment. And it’s down to the basic design choices made by Asus, which contrast with Sony’s choices for the Xperia 5 III – a 6.1” display with a taller 21:9 aspect ratio and classic bezels (with camera and all, making them thicker). That makes the phone 157x68x8.2mm in size....

Weekly poll results: the Redmi K40 Gaming looks like a winner

Gaming phones are not for everyone, but last week’s poll shows that if you want one, the Redmi K40 Gaming is a great pick. It stands apart from the rest of the K40 family (itself fairly popular) with a MediaTek Dimensity 1200 chipset replacing the Snapdragons. It has been on sale in China for a couple of weeks now, it goes for CNY 2,000 ($310 or so), the same price as the vanilla K40. The two share many similarities, including the 120Hz OLED with HDR10+ support. To improve response times, the gaming phone cranks up the touch sampling rate from 360Hz to 480Hz and includes shoulder...

According to inside sources, the Huawei-Leica partnership is coming to an end, with the P50 series being the last handsets from the company carrying the Leica branding. The information comes from a series of tweets posted by a fairly renowned tipster focusing on Huawei intel. He also suggests that Leica is looking for a new smartphone OEM partner and Xiaomi, Honor and Sharp are likely candidates. And why not all of them? A non-exclusive deal is quite possible, the Nokia-Zeiss and Sony-Zeiss partnerships are just one example. It's sad to see this partnership go as Huawei and Leica...

Asus Zenfone 8 could arrive as 8z in India

The Asus Zenfone 8 series was supposed to debut in India earlier this week, but that didn't happen since the launch was postponed due to the current COVID-19 situation in the South Asian country. It's unclear when the Zenfone 8 and 8 Flip will arrive in India, but whenever Asus introduces the duo in the country, the vanilla 8 could be called the 8z. The reason being that the Zenfone 8 Indian variant with model code I006D has appeared in the list of Google Play supported devices as the "ASUS 8Z". The 8 Flip, on the other hand, isn't listed as 8z Flip, but it won't be a surprise if Asus...

Initially known as a Sony Xperia Compact, the rumored Xperia Ace 2 makes an appearance in a series of case renders. Some suspect the phone will be a Japan-only device but only time will tell if this turns out to be true. Sony Xperia Ace 2 As for the case renders, they reveal a dual-camera setup on the back, what seems to be a side-mounted fingerprint reader and a dedicated button for the camera shutter. Unfortunately, though, there's no way of telling whether it will sport a punch-hole design or it will stick with a thicker top bezel. Sony Xperia Ace 2 If we go...

According to a new rumor from a prolific leakster from the company's home country, Realme will soon out the GT Neo Flash Edition. If you're wondering what the Flash in that name stands for, it's charging.
