Foldable Xiaomi phone appears on video with company's co-founder

Image
A new video has surfaced of Xiaomi's foldable device. This time, Lin Bin, the company's co-founder and president is demonstrating it on camera. It isn't entirely clear whether the video was intended to be released or not - but whatever the case may be - we have a closer look at Xiaomi's foldable phone. The video below was reposted to YouTube from Chinese social network Weibo. This appears to be the same device we saw in a short hands-on video tweeted by @evleaks earlier this month. The device doesn't fold closed but rather folds backwards and has two creases. The creases can clearly...

Huawei responds to Twitter images being mysteriously deleted

Image
A number of confused users buzzed on Reddit when they began to see strange behavior with the Twitter app on Huawei smartphones. The app was seemingly deleting photos immediately after the user saved them to the device using the Twitter app. After saving the image, users could see a message from "Huawei System Services" that said "Twitter has deleted a photo from Gallery". This caused an uproar on the internet that led many to believe that Huawei was intentionally blocking users from saving images from Twitter using some kind of feature baked into the OS. Via Reddit Huawei...

Samsung Galaxy S10+ leaks in another live image, still has dual selfie cams

Image
We're now less than a month away from Samsung's grand unveiling of its Galaxy S10 family, so the leaks are intensifying with every day that goes by. Last week we got a look at a live photo of the Galaxy S10+, showcasing the premier model's dual selfie cameras, nestled in an oval-shaped hole punched into its AMOLED display. Today a new live image of the phone has been outed, although this time the screen is off. The dual selfie cams are still there to be admired, and possibly hated by anyone who loves symmetry because of their position to the right in the top part of the display. If...

Meizu teases first "holeless" phone, will unveil it tomorrow

Image
The vivo APEX 2019 - a phone with no buttons or ports - will be unveiled on January 24. That's two days from now. However, Meizu wants to swoop in and steal vivo's thunder by unveiling the first "holeless" phone tomorrow. Note that "holeless" doesn't refer to a phone without a punch hole selfie camera. Obviously there are plenty of those around. No, it means no USB port, no headphone jack, no openings into the phone's body. Meizu's teaser • Same image, but the brightened up Why? vivo teases new periscope selfie camera flagship

Image
Just hours after we saw our first concept of the vivo Apex 2019, vivo has posted a promo video for its upcoming flagship. The teaser reads Goodbye Notch and its official hashtag is "elevating camera", suggesting that it will follow the footsteps of the original vivo NEX. It's unlikely that the teaser is for the upcoming vivo Apex 2019 concept since the pictured phone it most certainly isn't button-less. Odds are it shows the commercial product that will be born from it, much like the NEX came after the 2018 vivo APEX. Check out the video below. It's mostly a rehash of the vivo...

WSJ: 2019 iPhone XR will see the last LCD iPhone, 2020 belongs to OLED

Image
According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Apple will move to an all OLED iPhone lineup in 2020. That means that the 2019 successor to the iPhone XR will be the last iPhone to have an LCD. Such a move will allow for a "more flexible handset design" which could be a hint at a completely redesigned iPhone lineup in 2020, perhaps even at a foldable iPhone. It's well-documented how hard it was for Apple to create the liquid retina display on the iPhone XR, needing to experiment with the backlight design to extend the LCD to the edges. And even then the LCD on the iPhone XR has...

Our Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 review video is up!

Image
Smartphone bezels have been getting smaller and smaller, but one of the first smartphones to push these boundaries is the original Xiaomi Mi Mix. The Mi Mix 3 is the third iteration of the Mi Mix series that pushes the limit of bezels not by notches, nor below-the-display selfie cameras, but instead puts the camera literally behind the screen. Well, it only hides behind the display when you aren't using it and slides up when you, well, slide the phone open! As phone makers try to figure out the best way to make a full-screen phone, we get to see what kind of form factors they experiment...

It was a long time coming, but DxOMark has finally started testing the selfie cameras on phones. The top spot is shared by the Google Pixel 3 and the Samsung Galaxy Note9, which are head and shoulders above the third-placed Xiaomi Mi Mix 3. Apple's current flagship iPhone XS Max is further behind in fourth. Interestingly the Galaxy S9+ has a much lower score than the Galaxy Note9 despite the identical hardware. Our best guess is the...

Samsung may stop flagship manufacturing in India in response to new tax

Chinese makers settle on 5G prices: $74 more than 4G phones

Image
5G phones are coming and they will cost more than their 4G counterparts. How much more? A report claims that Chinese manufacturers have adopted a "5G+500" formula, meaning a CNY 500 premium (that's $74/€65). And it looks like that just barely covers the additional costs of producing a 5G phone. A 5G modem and compatible chipset are expected to add nearly $50 to the price then there's $30 more for new antennas and other hardware. That lines up with the early estimates of a $100 price hike in MSRP (accounting for taxes). Buyers in the West may be looking at a higher premium, however,...

Korean phone companies encounter worst export in last 16 years

Image
Phone companies all across the globe experienced a sluggish 2018 in sales due to the oversaturated market. Numbers for the past 12 months have started to arrive, with the first report coming straight from South Korea - the home of Samsung and LG. According to the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Institute of Information and Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation, mobile phone exports in 2018 totaled $14.61 billion, down 23% or about $4.4 billion, compared with 2017. This is the lowest figure since 2002, effectively meaning the last year was the worst for Korean...

Week 3 in review: Redmi Note 7 sells out quick, Pixel 3 Lite leaks in detail

Image
This week contained a few quality leaks of some major devices and one major OS. We also saw a lot of the new Redmi Note 7, which went on sale and sold out in minutes. The phone got its innards exposed on video and was used by Xiaomi's President to smash two walnuts. We also learned that the Redmi Note 7 is getting the Night Mode from the Mi Mix 3 and that it will be getting a Pro version powered by Snapdragon 675. Xiaomi capped the week off by showing its future under-display fingerprint tech. Leakland saw a blurry live photo of the Samsung Galaxy S10+ along with its dual in-display...

Weekly poll: vivo NEX Dual Display, hot or not?

Image
A poll from a month ago showed that people are interested in the extra functionality provided by a second screen. The vivo NEX Dual Display is the latest and, perhaps, most exciting addition to that genre. So, did vivo nail it or not? The eponymous feature comes from the pair of Super AMOLED panels - one 6.39" on the front and one 5.49" on the back. Both have 1080p resolution, but different aspect ratios (19.5:9 and 16:9, respectively). So, what can you do with the second screen? The best use case is to take selfies with the main camera - a 12MP sensor with large 1.4µm pixels and an...

Opinion: Bezel-less is not the way forward

Image
How do you imagine the phones in three years? Foldable? Bezel-less? With invisible cameras? Powered by new long-lasting batteries? I could get behind a few of those ideas, sure. But bezel-less - that can't be the way forward. While I agree that the sooner we get rid of those awful notches the better, the bezel-less dream should be put to rest, too. I know this is the unpopular opinion, but just bear with me for a while. I was once a fan of the all-screen phones myself. But having reviewed enough skinny bezel-less smartphones, I just can't imagine myself with a true bezel-less phone - it...

Top 10 trending phones of week 2

Image
The third week of the new year saw the Redmi Note 7 vastly extend its lead at the top of our popularity chart, but also some interesting new additions to the top 10. It appears that you guys are already focusing your attention on the phones to come in Q1 as the Pro version of the Redmi Note 7 and the flexible Galaxy Fold are the other two phones on the podium. That's despite the fact that neither of them is official yet. This has pushed the Redmi Note 6 Pro down to fourth, while the Galaxy A7 (2018) and the Huawei Y9 (2019) were unfazed by all this commotion and retain fifth and...

Weekly poll results: 2019 is the year of 5G

Image
Carriers are busy launching the first 5G networks and with not a minute to spare - last week's poll shows that people are excited about the possibilities of next generation mobile data. That's the option picked by close to a third of all voters. 5G promises higher bandwidth, lower latency, improved power usage and support for many, many more users, all browsing the web and interacting with smart services of the future. Beware, though, this excitement will be exploited with some deceptive marketing. Foldable phones are a distant second with 16% of the vote. We fear those will be showroom...

Counterclockwise: 10-year challenge

Image
Phone makers are not immune to memes - just look at how many brands tweeted out photos of eggs. Another meme popular right now is the "10-year challenge" - posting a photo of yourself from 2009 and from today. Let's see how far phones have come. Note: we're using popular phones from 2018 as brands haven't had much time to release 2019 models. Samsung's Galaxy brand turns 10 this year. It all started with the Samsung I7500 Galaxy - look at how the brand has grown. Literally, Samsung Galaxy Note9 is massive compared to its forefather. The Notes are largely responsible for the huge...

Android 9 in development for the vivo V11i, benchmark listing reveals

Image
vivo launched a closed Android Pie beta program towards the end of last year in China, and it seems the time for updates is nearing. Oddly enough, it's none of the original devices enlisted that's now surfaced on GeekBench running Android 9.0. Instead, it's the V11i or simply V11, as it is known in India. While we haven't had the chance to test this particular variant of the V11 (we did review the V11 Pro), the results posted with the new OS version are very much in line with what we've gotten out of other phones powered by the Helio P60 chipset, so the update shouldn't bring any...

Deal: Refurbished Apple HomePod for $240 in the US, today only

Image
Apple's HomePod Siri-enabled smart speaker was never particularly affordable at $349 in the US, but at $240 you could be tempted. That's what it goes for now on Woot - or rather $239.99. Both the white and space gray color options are available. Mind you, it's not new-new, but refurbished, and comes with a 90-day Woot warranty, instead of the usual one year. Additionally, if you're in Alaska or Hawai (or anywhere outside the US, for that matter) - tough luck, it doesn't ship there. The HomePod, announced in the summer of 2017 (how time flies), is Apple's answer to the Amazon Echo...

Exynos Galaxy S10 visits GeekBench, still behind the iPhone XS in single-core test

Image
The Samsung Galaxy S10 has been spotted on GeekBench and the numbers are in. This time, it's the Exynos 9820 variant for South Korea (SM-G973N), and there are notable differences with the previously seen results from the S10+ in Snapdragon 855 trim. The single-core result, in particular, is far ahead of any other chip in the Android world - the current Kirin 980 (around the 3400s) and Snapdragon 845 (ballpark is in 2400s) are no match for the next-gen Exynos, and early Snapdragon 855 figures are much lower too (3400-3550 depending on who you ask). In fact, the older Exynos 9810...

Here's an early look at the Samsung Galaxy S10 lineup

Image
It wouldn't be a big Samsung announcement if months ahead of it we didn't have a barrage of leaks coming our way. Such is the case with the Galaxy S10 that's to be unveiled on February 20, and this time around we're treated to a side-by-side look of the three differently-sized (and likely and evidently - differently-specced) versions of it. Samsung Galaxy S10E, S10, and S10+ (L to R), encased pic.twitter.com/Pk2gpXkXxn— Evan Blass (@evleaks) January 19, 2019 Left to right, it's the Galaxy S10 Lite (which may or may not be called S10E), Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10+. The info that the...
